Artist Statement
For this project I was assigned the challenge of creating sculptures inspired by nature. In a addition to this, I had to use a specific set of materials which were wire, black ink, white ink, tracing paper, string, white paper, gel medium and masking tape. When doing research for this project I looked more towards flowers for inspiration, but I only drew inspiration from flowers in two of my sculptures. Experimentation was very important when creating these works. I was specifically drawn to the use of ink and paper as I found that I could create graphic work.
Coral Not Coral was inspired by cacti and passionflowers despite its resemblance to coral. This sculpture was the first thing that I made and when putting on the tracing paper, parts of it ripped. As a person who likes to know things and control things, I knew I had to let things like the paper ripping be an addition to my work. Expressed Freedom was created to portray the beauty softness of butterflies. I wanted to portray a sense of freedom and weightlessness for the viewer. Royal Hives was created while thinking about the shape of bee hives and blueberry crowns. A theme of growth and death shines through depending on the direction that you look at it. If you go smallest to largest it represents growth, but if you go largest to smallest it represents death. Next, Nature Puzzle was made up of pieces that I created when experimenting and I thought they should make up their own sculpture. Nature Puzzle is about how nature is made up of small parts that create a whole. Unidentified Flying Nature Object was inspired by palm fronds and represents exploration and discovery of nature. Lastly, Twisted and Bound was inspired by a flower and vines on a tree branch. Twisted and Bound thinks about lines found in nature and represents the raw beauty of nature.
